As the Waters Cover the Sea.

May 14, 2023 Preacher: Gareth Franks Series: Habakkuk - Trusting God in Troubled Times

Topic: Christian Living Scripture: Habakkuk 2:4–20

The five woes recorded in this chapter are meant to be seen not only in light of Babylon’s destruction but also as a universal principle in history—teaching us that although evil people and wickedness may flourish for a while, they will one day be called to give an account. God promises to not overlook sinful rebellion but rather to judge it. As Habakkuk thought about what God was doing in his world, God gave Habakkuk three truths that helped him understand how he was to live:

  1. God Calls Us to Live By Faith (2:4-5)
  2. God Will Punish the Wicked (2:6-13, 15-19)
  3. God Will Glorify Himself (2:14)

Habakkuk had been worried about the future of God’s kingdom as a result of the prophesied siege by the Babylonians. In the middle of all these challenges that Habakkuk was walking through, that the people of God were experiencing, at this moment in their history as Habakkuk was writing, the promise of chapter 2v14 breaks through.

As Christians we have confidence that a day is coming when the knowledge of the glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. There is coming a day when His glory will fill the Earth. And knowledge of His glory, enjoyment of His glory like waters cover the sea.
