The Parable of the Ten Minas.

November 20, 2020 Preacher: Gareth Franks Series: The Parables of Jesus

Topic: Christian Living, The Gospel Scripture: Luke 19:11–27

Imagine that we knew that Jesus was going to return this time next week...7 days to go. My question to you this morning is, how would you live differently this week? What would be on your MUST DO LIST? And what would be on your REALLY DOESNT MATTER LIST?

In this passage, Jesus is hinting at his imminent departure. But he will be returning. Maybe this next week, maybe this next month or next year... we do not know. But what we do know is that He will return, and when he returns it will be in glorious triumph. At his coming we will all be called to give an account of the Minas we have been given while he was away.

This parable is for all those who claim to be followers of Jesus. All followers of Christ share in common, the Word of God and in particular, the central message of that Word, the gospel. The Minas in this parable represent the gospel that has been entrusted to us. Christians have been given the same gospel and we are told to do business with it for our King during His absence. Each servant is to be faithful in multiplying the gospel.

This parable mentions three categories: (1) reward for faithful stewards, (2) rejection for those who associate with Jesus but do not really trust him, and (3) judgment for rebels who openly reject him.” To which group do you belong? There is no neutral position with regard to Christ. Each of us is in one of the three categories. Where do you see yourself this morning?

If you profess to be a Christian, Make a commitment to live today and every day for the glory of God and the extension of his kingdom.

Discussion Questions

  1. What are some practical implications of “seeing yourself in business for Jesus”? How would we live differently?
  2. How does our view of God affect our service for Him? Where is the balance between seeing His grace and His judgment?
  3. Obviously, most people have many responsibilities other than Christian service. What does it mean for them to “do business for Jesus”? Is it a mindset or a certain number of hours?
  4. Can there be such a thing as a non-serving believer who lives for himself? Consider 1 Cor. 3:10-15 along with our text.
