God’s Heart Revealed

July 5, 2026 Preacher: Gareth Franks Series: Exodus - Saved to Worship

Scripture: Exodus 22:16–31

In Exodus 22:16-31 God applies His holiness to the ordinary, everyday realities of life. In these verses, God addresses matters of sexual responsibility, spiritual purity, compassion toward the vulnerable, financial integrity, respect for authority, and consecration in worship. What may appear at first glance to be a collection of unrelated regulations is actually a unified portrait of God’s covenant heart. Our study will follow the outline below:

1. God Upholds and Protects (v.16–17)
2. God Guards His People (v.18–20)
3. God Commands Compassion (v.21–27)
4. God Calls His People to Holiness (v.28–31)

Each command shows how deeply God cares about human dignity, the protection of the weak, the purity of His people, and the shaping of a community that reflects His character. In this passage, God teaches Israel—and us—that holiness is not merely a private spiritual ideal but a lived reality expressed in relationships, justice, worship, and daily conduct.

Getting Started

  1. Who is someone in your life who stepped in to protect you, defend you, or show compassion when you were vulnerable?
  • Exodus 22:16-31
  1. What insight, principle, or observation from Sunday’s sermon did you find to be the most helpful, eye-opening, or convicting?

Digging Deeper

  1. What three practices in verses 18–20 threaten Israel’s spiritual purity, and how does God respond?
  1. Who are the vulnerable groups mentioned in verses 21–24, and what does God promise to do if they are mistreated?
  1. What final commands in verses 28–31 reveal Israel’s covenant identity, and how do they relate to holiness?

The Heart of the Matter

  1. How should the church cultivate a culture where men protect purity rather than exploit it?
  1. How should the church reflect God’s compassion toward the vulnerable, especially foreigners, widows, and orphans?
  1. How should Christians respond when society directs anger toward foreigners or outsiders?
  1. How should Christians speak about and respond to corrupt or unjust leaders?
  1. How does the call to holiness in verse 31 shape your everyday life?
