Be Still and Know that I am God

September 21, 2025 Preacher: Brian Wiseman Series: Missions Emphasis

Topic: Missions Scripture: Psalm 46:1–11

Psalm 46 proclaims that God is a reliable refuge and source of strength, even when the world is in turmoil. It assures believers of His presence, protection, and ultimate power to bring peace, urging them to be still and trust in His sovereignty. His presence with us is the foundation for confident, peace-bringing engagement with a restless world. Our study will follow the outline below:

  1. We will not fear (Ps 46:1-3)
  2. The Joyful City of God (Ps 46:4-7)
  3. God will be Exalted in the Earth (Ps. 46:8-11)

Verses 1–7 highlights God's unwavering presence and power as the foundation for bold, fearless engagement with a broken world. God's divine stability empowers believers to live missionally, proclaiming hope and peace even when surrounded by turmoil. The imagery of the city of God, sustained by a life-giving river and defended by the Lord Himself, invites the Church to be a visible sign of God’s kingdom—resilient, joyful, and confident in His sovereignty—so that the nations may witness His glory and draw near.

Verses 8-11 calls God's people to witness and proclaim His ultimate victory and peace to the nations. These verses shift from chaos to calm, inviting the world to “behold the works of the Lord”—His power to end wars and dismantle weapons. The command to “be still and know” is not passive retreat but a summons to recognize God's reign and spread His glory.

Getting Started

1. Have you or a relative ever experienced or been close to a natural disaster? Share your story.

  • Read Psalm 46:1-11

2. What insight, principle, or observation from Sunday’s sermon did you find to be the most helpful, eye-opening, or convicting?

Digging Deeper

3. What does it mean for God to be described as “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” and how does this shape the psalmist’s response to fear? (verse 1)

4. Psalm 46:4–5 — What is the significance of the “river whose streams make glad the city of God,” and how does this contrast with the chaos described earlier?

5. Compare Philippians 2:9–11 to Psalm 46:10. What is the meaning of the command “Be still, and know that I am God,” and how does it relate to the broader themes of trust and divine sovereignty in the psalm?

The Heart of the Matter

6. How does the assurance of God's presence in verses 1–3 empower believers to engage fearlessly in mission amid global instability or personal crisis?

7. In verses 4–5, the city of God is described as unshaken—how can the Church today embody that kind of spiritual resilience and joy in hostile or secular environments?

8. What does God's command to “Be still and know that I am God” (verse 10) reveal about the posture of trust and surrender required for you to be an effective witness and ambassador for Christ?
