How Scripture Informed, Guided, and Fuelled Paul’s Mission
September 14, 2025 Preacher: Joe Berg Series: Missions Emphasis
Topic: Missions Scripture: Romans 15:15–24
In Romans 15:15–24, Paul warmly explains that he’s written boldly to the believers in Rome because God has given him the special calling of taking the good news to the Gentiles. He shares how Christ has worked through him—by word, deed, miracles, and the Spirit’s power—to spread the gospel from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum, always aiming to preach where Christ was not yet known. Paul says this is why he’s been delayed in visiting them, but now, with his work in those regions complete, he hopes to come to Rome on his way to Spain, so they can enjoy fellowship together and help him on his mission. It’s a glimpse of his heart for unreached people and his desire to partner with the church in gospel work. Our study will follow the outline below:
1. Scripture informs his mission
2. Scripture guides his mission
3. Scripture fuels his mission
Getting Started
- If you could instantly become an expert in sharing good news about anything — from the gospel to gardening tips — what would it be, and who would you tell first??
- Read Romans 15:15-24
- What insight, principle, or observation from Sunday’s sermon did you find to be the most helpful, eye-opening, or convicting?
Digging Deeper
- In Romans 15:18–19, what evidence does Paul give that his ministry has been effective, and what does this reveal about true gospel impact?
- Why, in Romans 15:20–21, is Paul determined to preach where Christ has not been named, and how does Isaiah’s prophecy shape this goal?
- What does Romans 15:23–24 reveal about Paul’s travel plans, and what does this teach us about partnership in mission?
The Heart of the Matter
- How does Paul’s sense of unworthiness in Romans 15:15–16 shape the way we approach our own ministry or service?
- In Romans 15:18–19, Paul focuses only on what Christ has accomplished through him. How can this perspective guard us from discouragement or pride?
- How does Paul’s ambition in Romans 15:20–21 challenge our priorities in mission?
