It Takes the Whole Church

June 22, 2025 Preacher: Dave Furman Series: Guest Speakers

Topic: Missions, The Church Scripture: Romans 16:1–20

Romans 16:1–20 celebrates the beauty of gospel partnership within a diverse and faithful church family. Paul highlights ordinary believers who played extraordinary roles in advancing God’s kingdom. Yet, he also issues a pastoral warning to stay vigilant against deceptive influences that threaten unity. The passage closes with a triumphant promise of Christ’s victory over evil, anchoring the church’s hope in God’s ultimate peace. Our study follows the outline below;

  1. It Takes the Whole Church to Advance the Kingdom of God in this World (v.1-16)
  2. Paul’s Charge (v.17-20)

Verse 1- 16, highlight the beauty of gospel partnership. Every name reflects the truth that it takes the whole church, working together in love and service, to advance God’s kingdom in the world.

The Apostle Paul urges believers in verses 17–20 to stay spiritually alert—watchful against smooth-talking deceivers who serve themselves rather than Christ. Paul calls for discernment to protect gospel unity and exhorts the church to remain hopeful, assuring them that God will soon crush Satan under their feet.

Getting Started

1. Have you ever received a heartfelt letter or message of appreciation? How did it impact you? Share your experience?

  • Read Romans 16:1-20

2. What insight, principle, or observation from Sunday’s sermon did you find to be the most helpful, eye-opening, or convicting?

Digging Deeper

3. Phoebe, Priscilla and Aquila, Andronicus and Junia—Paul highlights men and women, Jews and Gentiles, leaders and hosts. How do these examples affirm the importance of every role in gospel ministry?

4. Part of the Apostle Paul’s Charge in verses 17–20, is to be watchful. What kinds of divisions and “smooth talk” threaten gospel unity in NLC context? How does Paul describe their motivation (v. 18), and why is vigilance so necessary?

5. Verse 20 contains a stunning promise: “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” How does this echo Genesis 3:15 and point us to Christ’s ultimate victory?

The Heart of the Matter

6. Paul repeatedly emphasizes love, unity, and discernment in this passage. What kind of culture does this build in a gospel-shaped church?

7. Where do you need to be more alert, more discerning, or more hopeful in your walk with Christ?

8. The names in this chapter aren’t famous to us, but they were precious to Paul—and far more, they are known by God. In the same way, every act of faith, every unseen sacrifice, and every gospel partnership in our community is noticed by the Lord. In what ways can you strengthen gospel partnerships in NLC this week?
