Ultimate Choices

Topic: Christian Living Scripture: Matthew 6:19–24
In the first half of Matthew 6, Jesus described the believer’s private life (giving, praying, fasting); in the second half, he was concerned with our public life (questions of money, possessions, food, drink, clothing, and ambition). Jesus made it clear that you cannot serve God and anything else. Jesus spoke about the choices we make when He taught about and proclaimed the Good News of Kingdom of God in Matthew 6:19-24.
The main idea in this passage is that our eyes shape our hearts to serve a master. As we look at this passage, consider the outline below:
- The Choice Between Two Treasure (v.19-21)
- The Choice Between Two Visions (v.22-23)
- The Choice Between Two Masters (v.24)
Those whom God has rescued from sin and death live a new life before the face of God. They are under His sovereign rule and live to love, serve, and worship him. By beholding Christ we are being transformed from one degree of glory to another.
What you treasure affects who you become. But it requires the Lord who is the Spirit. As a work of grace in our hearts. We cannot do this on our own. These aren't techniques that you can do to work it out in your own life. You need the work of the Holy Spirit working in and through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He who began a good work in Christians will be faithful to complete it (Phil 1:6).
Digging Deeper
1. Are there any possessions (things or status or relationship) that dominate your gaze and affection?
2. What occupies your thoughts when you get still? What occupies our daydreams? These may be what we treasure. Assess them carefully.
a. Money? b. Security? c. Work? d. Education? e. People’s perception of who you present yourself to be? f. Sex?
3. What is it that you fret about most?
4. Apart from our family, what or whom do you most dread losing?
5. What are some things that you measure others by? This question is a very revealing mirror because we measure other people by what we treasure. a. Do you measure others by their clothing, their education, their theology, their homes, their athletic prowess, and their success?
6. What is it that you cannot be happy without?
